These non-stop 6:00 swims repeated the instructions within the 6:00. At about 5:00, coach would yell “Go!” signifying a FAST 50 breast starting immediately.
The instructions on the second round are 5 cycles kick, 4 cycles Swim, 3 cycles speed drill (head up, narrow pull, narrow kick) and repeat.

Fun challenge set combining a little technique work, quality, and some underwater kicking across our 6 lane pool.

We did the fartlek set followed by 4 rotations of the stations below. The diving well underwater kicks were done hooked to a stretch cord anchored to a nearby fence for resistance.

We like using “fartleks” to get some low intensity technique and turn work in.

We generally don’t do “recovery workouts.” Not because I don’t believe they have benefit, but rather because rarely do I have an entire group on the same page where that is what they all need at the same time.
Today was one of those rare times. Most of the group has just come off their high school state championships. We spent time at the beginning of practice going back over what we learned, how we swam, and what we can do better next time.
Here was the main block of the workout:
3 x 10:00 fartlek @11:00
#1 – 10 cycles kick against the wall at every wall then great underwaters on the push off
#2 – 25 drill/25 build done as 50 free/50 no free
#3 – all choice, sprint 1 cycle on first lap, 2 cycles on 2nd lap up to 4 cycles on fourth lap, continue that pattern.
3 x 500 kick @ coach’s go
25 fast -25 ez
50 fast- 50 ez
75 fast-75 ez
100 fast-100 ez

A “fartlek” is a continuous swim where we change speeds or points of emphasis.
During the 10:00, I would occasionally bang a metal wrench on the side of the pool, signaling an all-out sprint to the next wall followed by continuation of the swim.

SCY. We use the term “fartlek” to mean a continuous swim where we are changing speeds or instructions. In this set, we alternated a fartlek with a brief freestyle set. Swimmers were on either the more “distance-y” left side (milers) or the more middle distance-oriented right side. We came together for the 150s FPA (fastest possible average) at the end.

Our swimmers enjoy fartleks in part because there is no interval so that they can focus on technique. This set allowed them to choose their stroke while getting some good tech work in while I filmed a few individuals and helped make corrections.

We occasionally use “fartleks” (non-stop swims with changing instructions or speeds) to get in some aerobic swimming with good technique and no interval pressure.

Fartlek = continuous swim. Start off with the fly instructions, then when wrench bangs on side of pool, sprint fly into turn and sprint 25 back. Then follow back instructions. Repeat for Bk-Br and Br-Fr transitions.

This is 8:00 of continuous swimming with 1:00 rest. Each time there are slightly different instructions. “Deep” refers to deep practice, where I ask our swimmers to focus on one technical element and try to improve it. On #4, they swim continuous backstroke until they hear me bang the wrench on the side of the pool. When they hear the bangs, they sprint br 2 walls (25-50m) and then return to swimming steady backstroke.
