So…the ultimate swimmer dilemma. I am a swim coach and a swimming teacher in a high school. I refer to a “lap” in my swimming classes as 50 yards. Swimmers refer to a lap as 25 yards

In this case, I referred to a lap as one 12-yard width of the pool.
Technically speaking, you are correct. In the U.S., most commonly one 25 yard length is referred to as a lap.
